A week of reading, gotta love holidays!

I am actually quite impressed that I managed to fit in this many books around a week of climbing but the combination made it a pretty perfect holiday for me :)

'Cairngorm John' by John Allen

Inspirational tales of Mountain Rescue in the Cairngorm National Park. I admire these people so much, probably even more now. I still aspire to be that fit and be near enough to contribute my time to their cause. Really interesting to hear all the debates from behind the scenes.
I think I did expect it to be a bit more erudite with all the accolades and Boardman Tasker shortlisting but it was highly engaging. It felt like a long evening of tales and memories being told in a cosy pub, an enjoyable and inspiring experience.

'Adventures In The Rocky Mountains' by Isabella Bird

Slim wee volume from the Penguin 'Great Journeys' series. Amazing to think what this woman achieved back in the 1870's. What people lived through on a regular basis then would have most modern-day folks crying for their mums and she went way further than most men, let alone women. Her descriptions of the mountians are also really beautiful and evocative.

'On The Edge - Adventurous Escapades From Around The World' by Lonely Planet

Some fun tales in here...and some really weird and off the wall ones. Not really sure what I thought of the collection as a whole, think I will have to lend it to a friend and see what they think. Won't be overly upset if it doesn't come back though. Shame as I am normally a huge fan of all travel writing.

'Thumbs Up Australia' by Tom Parry

I really did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did but it's funny and informative and managed to excite my imagination about OZ, which has never been achieved before. Definitely recomend this for any armchair-traveller, temporary or otherwise.

'Broken' by Karin Slaughter

This was a decent read but i just didn't grip me as I expected it to, maybe I just wasn't in the mood (holidays on the brain. It will be heading to the charity shop when I next go.
